Monthly or yearly
Twelve monthly payments come to $179.88, against $139 for the annual plan. The monthly plan is worth it only for someone who expects to keep Prime for fewer than 10 months, for example around the holidays. Amazon's page says members who have not used their benefits can get up to a full refund of the current period when they cancel.
The 2022 increase, from Amazon's own filing
Amazon announced the change in the exhibit to its current report of February 3, 2022, the same document that gave its fourth-quarter results. It cited the expansion of Prime benefits and the rise in wages and transportation costs. The young adult and Prime Access plans followed within weeks: the copies of Amazon's page show $6.49 and $5.99 on January 1, 2022 and $7.49 and $6.99 on April 1, 2022.
